Advancing Colony Care

Nonhuman primates (NHPs) have a unique role in biomedical research because of their close phylogenetic relationship to human beings.

Efficient management of NHP colonies requires a method to predict the prospective population with regard to both absolute numbers and population structure. The ability to predict the detailed structure of populations in terms of age, sex and life-stage distribution improves resource management, animal housing planning, and helps to establish and maintain a balanced age/gender population.

WhatIf© is a mathematical modeling program for prediction of population structure in breeding colonies of nonhuman primates. This software allows for projections of age class, life stage, and gender, as well as simulations of the effect on population structure of various demographic and management parameters.
